From Daniel (age 15)
Dear Daniel (age 8),
Hi Daniel. Maybe you are asking yourself who I am, why I put the age on this letter, or why I’m writing to you without you knowing me. Let me explain why. First, let me tell you who I am. You have known me all your life because I’m you. I am now in the year 2007, so I’m like your future.
First, I want to tell you that I’m writing to you because I want to tell you to enjoy your neighborhood. In the year 2005, you are going to move to the United States and you are going to live in a boring neighborhood that is not going to have anything fun or interesting. For example, the neighbors never go out of their apartments, and if they go out, they never talk to each other. I know that it sounds strange, because I remember that in our neighborhood everybody talks to each other.
In your future neighborhood, there are going to be only a few little kids and they are never going to go out of their houses because they are going to be playing video games or things like that. Next, I tell you that in the neighborhood there is not going to be anything fun because in the years that I have been living there (1 ½ years) you are only going to have like 3 real friends, and they are just going to live in the apartments like 6 months each one. So you are not going to have all the friends and fun things that you have in Mexico. Then I say that the neighborhood doesn’t have any interesting things because you are going to live in the middle of the city and you are going to be surrounded by buildings, houses, stores, and all the things like that. You are going to have a huge front yard with only one big tree, a few shrubs, and a little playground (that is not going to have any kids playing). And that’s all you are going to have to explore.
I want you to enjoy your neighborhood because as I told you before, you are going to live in a boring neighborhood, and you are not going to have all the friends that you have right now and you are not going to have anything to do. All of the time that you are going to have free, you are going to be sitting down in front of a computer, chatting, looking at the TV, or hearing music (and that’s boring too).
So please enjoy your neighborhood. Do all the things that you are going to lack when you come here. You have just 5 years to do this, so don’t stay in your home doing nothing. Be active.
